Type 2 diabetes
Diabetes is a nasty disease. It comes on silently and by the time there are symptoms, permanent organ damage has often occurred. It is the number one cause of blindness, kidney failure, and amputations in Singapore. It also causes premature death due to early onset heart disease and stroke. Within the next 10 years, 1 in 3 Singapore adults will be diabetic (and most will not even be aware until it may be too late). The rate of rise of diabetes in developed countries is shocking and startling.
Like many other chronic disease, diabetes is usually NOT inherited through genes, rather we inherit the lifestyle choices (poor diets and sedentary lifestyles) that over the years cause diabetes.
Many of us think diabetes is due to consuming too much “sweet food”. This is NOT correct. Type 2 diabetes (the most common type in adults) is actually a state of INSULIN Resistance. Insulin resistance is caused by:
High meat intake (fats and animal proteins are major contributors to insulin resistance)
Simple (NOT complex) carbohydrates in processed food (which may not even be sweet)
Lack of fibre (so eat as much fruit and vegetables as you can and want.. even if its sweet)
The above poor dietary choices is also linked to obesity, heart disease, cancer and many other disease linked to poor health states.
The last bit of good news is WFPB diets in studies have shown to REVERSE insulin resistance.. so diabetes is no longer a lifetime curse.
